We’re excited to feature our student Dimitris Giouris, who composed the music and contributed to the sound design for the student short film The Break Room, directed by Giles Alderson and shot by students alongside a professional crew and mentors.
Why music and sound?
“I’ve always been fascinated by how sound can shape emotion and tell stories beyond what’s visible on screen,” Dimitris says. “During the course, I felt inspired to offer my ideas for the sound design and music, and I was delighted that the director was open to it. Getting involved felt natural, not because someone told me to, but because it’s something I truly love doing. It wasn’t always easy, but it was incredibly fulfilling and inspiring.”
What inspires your music?
“For me, music comes from observing life, the textures of everyday sounds, emotions, and moments that often go unnoticed. I’m inspired by atmosphere, by the way light changes a room, and by how silence can carry a feeling as strong as a melody. Travelling around the world also inspires me deeply. Discovering new cultures, environments, and soundscapes always gives me fresh ideas. I try to translate those subtle details into sound, turning emotion into frequency, space, and rhythm.”
Your insights from the shooting process.
“The shooting process was an amazing learning experience,” Dimitris shares. “It helped me understand how sound interacts with movement, dialogue, and space. I was lucky to have my mentor, Kostadin Saparevski, who guided me through the technical side of boom operation and sound on set. His support helped me combine what I learned during shooting with how I approach sound design in post. Being part of such a collaborative environment showed me how every detail, every sound, becomes a vital part of storytelling. I’m excited to keep exploring how music and sound can shape stories in film projects.”
